Boston's West End

Neighborhood Information

Although the area known as the West End has been around since the early 19th century when dirt from Beacon Hill was used to fill in a pond and a small bay, few Bostonians today call it that. This may be a result of many of the buildings in the previously low-income West End being demolished, starting in the 1950s, for a controversial urban renewal project. Virtually the only remaining buildings include those for the enormous Massachusetts General Hospital, a former prison, some houses of worship and a historic mansion.

West End Luxury BuildingBordered by the Charles River, Beacon Hill and Cambridge Street, and the area around the TD Garden (Boston Garden arena), the area comprises government office towers, and some high-rise and upscale apartment complexes. The downtown financial center is a short walk, with Hanover Street, the heart of the North End’s Italian restaurant area, perhaps a twenty-minute stroll. Cambridge Street offers restaurant and drinking establishments, and a large supermarket. Also nearby is Charles Street located within the flat section of Beacon Hill, a venue of upscale restaurants, antique merchants, and other retail stores.


Luxury West End ApartmentThe area also offers easy access to the MBTA Red Line, with rapid access to Harvard Square or South Station, and the Green Line. Buses run along Cambridge Street too.
